A Mouse

Your mouse is your pointer. It is how you pick where to go on your computer.
There is a right and left side. To go places, double click the  side of your mouse.
Clicking the right side is like a secret. You can find out a file's properties, copy or delete images with a right click. You will usually use the left--your pointer.

ReBoot: The 1st Thing to Try

The first thing you need to understand is many computer problems can be fixed by rebooting the computer. That just means you turn the computer off, wait a few minutes, then turn it back on. Presto! With a simple reboot, your computer will reset itself and untangle many problems.

Turning the computer off and back on is called rebooting. It is always the first thing to try if something goes wrong.

Fear Not!

You are not going to break the computer.

What You Need

  • A computer tower
  • A monitor
  • A mouse
  • A mouse pad
  • A keyboard
  • Internet Access (Not dial up!)

PC or Mac?

One of the first things people will ask is what kind of computer you are using---a PC or a Mac?
These are two types of computers. IBM made the PC. Mac is made by Apple. IBM's approach of sharing made the PC much more common.

Apple was proprietorial in their approach. They are more expensive and their owners are fiercely devoted.

This site is dedicated to learning on the PC.

Computer Kindergarten for the Fearful Adult

Computers can seem very frightening to the uninitiated. For those who have a fear of entering the digital age, considering themselves "too old to learn, " I assure you it is never too late.

I remember my pre-computer savvy days. I watched in wonder as I saw others navigate, sending emails, sharing photos, buying and selling, publishing memoirs. I thought it amazing and magical and complicated, and not for me! I was afraid I would break it or crash it and it seemed so confusing! Never did I think that someday I'd find navigating and performing tasks on the computer very easy too.

You don't have to be young or a computer nerd. If I could learn, so can you. I intend to give you the basics to help you join the digital age. It is not going away, and most likely by now you have experienced some frustration being shut out by your lack of computer skills...and fear.

Computer 101 is too much for the fearful Ludite.
We are going back to kindergarten, learn the basics and disregard the rest.
If I could do it, so can you.
